Olli Caldwell will race in just his third British F4 meeting at the Knockhill
Circuit in Scotland this weekend. Based just 25 miles from Edinburgh the meeting is a special one for Olli with his maternal family hailing from
Scotland and after a positive test yesterday Olli is confident to add to the two wins and three podiums achieved at Snetterton last time out.
Just a few days ago it was Nurburgring where Olli was racing in the ADAC F4 Championship where he showed what overtaking skills he really has making nine moves in race three. He’ll certainly need those with him again this weekend in what is arguably the hardest track to overtake on. Knockhill is no regular circuit for F4 racing with the average lap time around 50 seconds on a track that is just 1.2 miles in length.
One thing this does mean is qualifying will be crucial on Saturday morning. Given the results of Snetterton this will not be phasing Olli too much with the 15-year-old
qualifying 5th place of the 17 drivers. Having not been old enough to qualify at Croft that is his only result in qualifying this season. Once into the races overtaking will be extremely tricky and chances for a very good result could present themselves in the reverse grid race three.
Despite the fact he’ll be a round down on his Challenge Cup opponents in points come the end of the season early form has not forced Olli to take his eyes off the title. He’s already scored an impressive 92 points and with more wins and podiums throughout the season he’ll have the likes of Oliver York and Harry Webb very nervous. In terms of the overall championship Olli is already up to 3th with a top ten finish in sight.
This won’ be Olli’s first time racing at Knockhill. Caldwell visited the circuit with the Ginetta Junior Championship last year where he took two top ten finishes on his
very first appearance to the track. That experience, although in a completely different car, should help when it comes to the racing this weekend.
There was an official test day for the F4 grid yesterday and over the five sessions Olli finished inside the top ten three times with 8th his best result of
the day. Perhaps more impressive, he was the quickest Challenge Cup driver in three sessions and ran his race winning Arden teammates very close on most
occasions!
: “I’m really looking forward to racing at Knockhill this weekend! It’s actually one of my favorite tracks on the calendar. Testing was okay yesterday, we had a few car issues, but we should be on the pace for qualifying.”
