It has just been announced that Olli Caldwell is one of ten drivers shortlisted for this year’s Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award. Since 1989 the Award has recognised future stars of the sport with previous winners including Lando Norris, George Russell, Jenson Button, David Coulthard, Anthony Davidson, Dario Franchitti and Paul Di Resta.
This is the second consecutive year Olli has made the ten-driver shortlist, but is hoping this year to get to the final shootout. Four finalists will soon be selected to compete in two days of testing at Silverstone in a range of cars including MotorSport Vision Formula 2 Cars, a Ligier LMP3 sport scar and an Aston Martin Vantage GT3.
A judging panel led by British Racing Drivers Club Vice President Dereck Warwick will decide this year’s winner. He will be joined on the panel by former winners Darren Turner, Andrew Kirklady and Alexander Sims, along with Jason Plato and other leading figures from the Motorsport community.
The winner will then be revealed at the Autosport Awards on the 8th December and will receive £200,000 and a test drive with the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Formula 1 Team.
Olli’s nomination comes just days after taking victory at Imola in the Formula Regional European Championship. In a weekend filled with podiums Olli has now moved himself up to fourth in standings with a total of seven podium finishes.
Fresh out of Formula 4, Olli has proved his skill to adapt quickly and as the sole Briton in the championship he has flew the flag for British Motorsport proudly. With three rounds still remaining Olli will be hoping to add to that win tally and move himself up the championship standings.
Olli Caldwell: “Super pleased and excited to be announced on the shortlist of the Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Award. I’d like to thank them for noticing my achievements in the Formula Regional European Championship this year and hope that I can continue building my success with them.”
Olli and the fellow nine finalists will be invited to an event hosted by the Awards team in the coming weeks where the final four finalists will be revealed.
